Clarkson Foam Book Support
Improper support of bound books and manuscripts, when being read, photographed, or exhibited, contributes to their deterioration. Proper handling and sympathetic methods of support are important contributions to book preservation and aid significantly in maintaining the book’s structure.
The commonly used reading lectern is steeply raked. It caused the text-block to drag downward on the binding structure. This strain increases when the book is open.
Designed by Christopher Clarkson, internationally recognized book conservator, the Clarkson Foam Book Supports provide flexible support for an open book. They accommodate a wide range of book sizes, and adjust to accommodate any opening, whether to the first page, the last, or the middle.
A blunt, angled wedge creates the base pad, upon which two angled wedges are set. The spine support and rectangular pads can be added and adjusted as needed. A pair of weighted “snakes” keeps the book open, allowing the researcher to use both hands for note-taking, and reducing handling grime and pressure damage.
